Today I was so nervous about not waking up or having enough time to eat some breakfast so when I checked the clock and it said 5:45, I just got up. Took a shower to wake up, not much warm water and almost as lousy water pressure as in Thailand. After the sandwiches I bought last night I got out to wait for the bus.

Fairwind Hotel, where I’m staying.

Today the scouts in Sweden are celebrating 100% scout so I put on the branded t-shirt I brought and while waiting for the bus I took the opportunity to change my profile picture for the day.

Got on the bus and after a few more stops we left Miami, heading towards Key West. A girl was our guide and told us a lot of stuff about Miami, Miami-dade, and the Florida Keys. For example that the difference between a key and an island is that an island has beaches/shores of sand, while a key has rocks/cliffs as edges. We did a stop at a Mcdonald’s where people could get some breakfast.

Lots of bridges on the way to Key West. This is the old railway. Interesting how something can grow there.

At 11:30 we arrived at Key West. I got my wristband for the Old Town Trolley Tours and then headed off in the opposite direction. On the bus ride, I found out that the battery in my selfie stick had run out so I went to a hardware store to find a new one. Luckey enough their selection of batteries was sufficient and the selfie stick began to work again.

Walked over to Hard Rock Café to get Peter a magnet and then stepped on the trolly. Our conductor was called Aaron and he was quite the funny guy, been doing this “driving in circles” for 14 years. Lots of fun and interesting facts about Key West.

Stepped off at the southernmost point to get the one picture I had to get while down here. It’s the point furthest to the south of all continental USA. 90 miles to Cuba. Didn’t find any binoculars, but I’ll take their word for it that it’s there 🙂

Required picture.

Took the next trolly back to the start and began looking for some food. The time had passed 14 and except for two bananas, I hadn’t eaten anything since breakfast before the bus ride started. Found Salty Frogs where I ordered the “hot chicken”. I got warned that the sauce was really spicy so we decided to keep it on the side. Good decision! A fun fact about Key West is that it once was a center for cock fighting, but when that became illegal, they just got released and somehow they are protected by law. This means they are running all around the city, even in restaurants. It was a bit odd feeling, eating a chicken sandwich, while a rooster was looking for spoils beneath my table.

I also poured the ice from my (big) glass of water into my Thermo flask and the waitress pointed out that they had a tap where I could fill up my bottle. Nice to have some cold water for the trip home. Went to the Shipwreck Museum which was interesting, and coincidently had a tower where you could get a decent view above all the rather low buildings.

Can’t see the Atlantic from here, but it over there, somewhere.

Some more walking around got me a mug, that’s what I’m collecting from places I’ve visited. The bus left at 18:00 and went straight back to Miami. When I stepped off I went to a pizza place that was still open and bought myself a slice for a (really) late dinner. Now I’m (as usual) in the room and writing this blog post. Seems like it’s going to rain after lunch tomorrow. Hope to be able to take a swim in the Atlantic before that.
